Introduction

Amylase is a digestive enzyme primarily produced by the pancreas and salivary glands. Its main physiological function is the breakdown of complex carbohydrates into smaller sugar molecules during digestion. Although chronic pancreatic disease may not always produce marked amylase elevation, serial testing can provide useful supportive clinical information.

Conditions such as mumps and bacterial parotitis may increase serum amylase activity due to salivary gland involvement.

Renal Dysfunction

Because amylase is filtered by the kidneys, impaired renal clearance may contribute to elevated serum concentrations.

Urinary Amylase Assessment

Urine amylase testing can be particularly useful because urinary amylase levels may remain elevated longer than serum concentrations following pancreatic injury.


Recent Scientific Insight

Recent studies have emphasized the value of combining amylase with lipase and emerging inflammatory biomarkers to improve diagnostic accuracy in acute pancreatitis. Researchers have demonstrated that multimarker approaches may provide better assessment of disease severity, complications, and patient outcomes than amylase measurement alone.

In addition, artificial intelligence-based clinical decision tools are being developed to integrate laboratory biomarkers, including amylase, with imaging findings and clinical parameters to support earlier diagnosis and risk stratification in patients presenting with acute abdominal pain.
